Press Release from Caroline Records "What is the sound of Smashing Pumpkins? GISH! Actually, Gish is the debut Caroline LP from Chicago's SMASHING PUMPKINS. The title, however, isn't eponymous onomatopoeia. It's named after the great American actress, Lillian Gish. "When I was little," explains singer/guitarist Billy Corgan, "my grandmother used to tell me that one of the biggest things that ever happened was when Lillian Gish rode through town on a train, my grandmother lived in the middle of nowhere, so that was a big deal." When the Pumpkins ride through town, big things happen. The quartet, made up of Billy, James (guitar), D'arcy (bass) and Jimmy Chamberlin (drums), were barely off the starting block when their first single, "I Am One b/w Not Worth Asking" created a coast to coast buzz and went through several pressings. A few months later, their second release, "Tristessa/La Dolly Vita" put them on national radio charts. Now in the Spring of '91, they bring us Gish, a powerful Lp produced by Butch Vig and Billy Corgan. To say that the Pumpkins play hook laden uncompromising rock n' roll is to sell them short. There's something in the combination of Billy's iron fist in a velvet glove rocking and crooning, James' textural yet explosive jamming, D'arcy's grinding girl next door funking and Jimmy's subtle and sensational pounding that defies comparison. So what exactly is the sound of Smashing Pumpkins? Gish. And you better be listening. And that's no joke. Contact: Janet Billig"
