MCIS review-Turntable

The Infinite Sadness is what I encountered after listening to this record for the first time. With such weaselly, pathetic lines as "Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage" and "God is empty, just like me," I damn near wanted to kill old Billy. But you know, after a few listens, I decided it's not so bad.

Almost all of the music on this record is great. Even in its worst moments, the music is still great. For example, the song "Jellybelly" sounds very mean, but at the same time, the music is catchier than hell. I think the guitar solo could go, but they've gotta make it go that extra mile for angst's sake.

Now, "Zero" is a great song, but he ruins the whole concept of it by constantly wearing that annoying shirt (if you've seen Billy lately, the odds are that you'll know what I'm talking about). The great lyric of the song is "I never let on that I was on a sinking ship." Unfortunately, the rest of the lyrics all suck.

One of the major disappointments, though, is that "Mellon Collie" is more masculine. It's weird, but I liked how feminine Corgan was on "Siamese Dream." It was ironic that we had all these homophobic jocks walking around listening to these songs that were sung by this real girlyboy. And "Siamese Dream" was the fucking shit, wasn't it? What a classic. That's the kind of album that people are still going to be listening to in 20 years. The Smashing Pumpkins are the Led Zeppelin of the 90's. Just instead of zen, they've got apathy.
