Fulflej Biography
from Mercury, Scratchie, and Fulflej

Fulflej first came to life in an abandoned army base in the outskirts of Richmond, VA. There, the trio (known later as M.C. No Joke G, Andre Fill-ups, and Maff-yoo Nillsun) spent the chilly days following the end of the Vietnam War searching for food, water, shelter, and of course, the perfect beat.

Having no family, no friends, no ability to spell, fulflej made the most of their knowledge of the Chinese language, judo and polyquadradic topological calculus. Armed with this vast array of information, the band formed a master plan to take the world on and to (quoting from their song) "sit back and laugh at all the mutherfuckin things that you don't have."

In reality, fulflej burst straight out of Richmond with a sound that pulses with the eccentric integrity of a true, self-taught D.I.Y. band. Mixing influences as diverse as hardcore punk, hip-hop, and prog-rock, fulflej has crafted a sonic identity that defies an easy sound bite and sticks a finger in the side of the contemporary music scene.

In 1986, fulflej came together in its first incarnation as the Un-Ones (later changed to Rithm Lyd) with M.C. No Joke G teaching himself to play a broken 3 string guitar and Andre Fill-ups playing "Chockful o' Nuts" coffee can filled with nails and a pickle barrel. With their home-made instruments the two began making tapes through the built-in mic of No-Joke's boom box. To their surprise, the two began to sell hundreds of tapes throughout Southeastern Virginia.

In 1992 No Joke and Andre moved to Richmond, VA and hooked up with drummer Maff-yoo Nillsun, who had played with D.C. ska band Ska-Tah and punk band Gang of Defects. With No Joke now playing a real guitar, and Andre moving to bass, the lineup for fulflej was complete.

Soon they were recording and selling demo tapes and touring the South opening for acts such as Archers of Loaf, Reverend Horton Heat, and Catherine. At the Catherine show they so impressed drummer Kerry Brown and his wife, Smashing Pumpkins' bassist D'arcy, that the two immediately signed fulflej to their new label, SCRATCHIE RECORDS.

Fulflej's debut CD, The Microwave EP, was released in January to enormous critical approval and fantastic radio play.
