With an opening line as addictive and curious as "The world is a vampire," sung in Billy Corgan's familiar reedy rasp, and a chorus that stays firmly wedged in your mind like a favorite vice, the song's close second for Best Single was certainly well deserved. "Despite all my rage," Billy seethes calmly, "I am still just a rat in a...CAGE!!!" And with one word he swoops out the song's dark opiate of a verse into the pained, aggressive chorus with a blazing of psychedelic guitars. Best thing about the song, though, is that it is just a hint of all of the expert pathos of their latest CD Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness.
